Maker Spaces vs Libraries

I’m going to cut to the chase and in my opinion, MSs are great and certainly a valuable addition to any school. The opportunity to encourage Ss to tinker, design, create, collaborate and more is priceless.

Now I say priceless but some MSs are coming at a very high cost. There are too many schools that are paying for MSs with their libraries and media centers. I’m all for 21st-century learning but not at the expense of our school libraries and librarians. Sadly, there are schools that are eliminating their librarian positions in favor of a more technology-oriented certification and some school officials are chomping at the bit to throw out all the dust-covered books.

Now, I am partly passionate about this topic because my wife Katelyn is a librarian but I am also passionate about this because I am also ‘old school’ in some regards. Students are leaving high school and sometimes college not knowing how to find quality information – and we’re not just talking about research for essays and papers.

We’re already on the brink of our children not knowing how to sign their names because the script is not being taught everywhere let’s not sacrifice the books for what some people believe is a world of making.

Let’s stop trading valuable libraries full of life and books in their entirety for fancy chairs, 3D printers, Keurig machines, and Lego.

I’ll finish with something Katelyn shared with me the other day. She said, “When you ask Google a question, it will give you a million answers. When you ask a highly qualified librarian you just get the right answer.”

#EdTech Recommendation

Padlet!

I’ve talked about Padlet before on the podcast but they’ve recently added some great new features.

Native video recording – Video recording works on …

  • Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browsers on Windows and macOS
  • Chromebooks
  • iOS Safari
  • Android Chrome
  • Padlet iOS app
  • Padlet Android app

Backchannel, a new way to collaborate using a familiar, messaging like interface.

Reactions enable peer-to-peer quantitative feedback on Padlet and allow you to collaborate in many new ways.

At the moment, you can choose from one of four reaction types:
  • People can choose to like a post.
  • People can choose to upvote or downvote a post.
  • People can choose to give posts 1-5 stars.
  • People can choose to score posts on a scale defined by you (e.g. 0-20 or 0-100).

When I first read about these updates and new features I joked that we would start to see Padlet Fever. These are solid additions and when you put Padlet and Flipgrid toe to toe I think Padlet has pulled ahead.
